shelf-made, 2012

Bulky waste, water pumps, water, fluorescein, hose, silicon, heaps of earth, holes in the ground / Dear Garage exhibition no.1

shelf-made is an installation constructed out of shelves and parts of shelves. They are arranged in such a way that water is able to flow down the construction as an unbroken stream. Holes dug out of the ground are filled with water and pumps are installed to insure the water’s continuous flow. These pools of water in the ground constitute the source, so to speak. Two transparent hoses carry water in two different axis directions of the garage space. From these points the water is then directed over the shelves and back to the pools of water, so that the cycle can begin again. Disused water pools, reservoirs as it were, form miniature lakes in the landscape. Hyper-real sounds of flowing, dripping and rushing water combine to form an orchestral landscape. A stream of water that is inconsistent in its flow through pressure and water loss and a material (wood), that if exposed to water for a certain period of time - an IKEA shelf will start to buckle after approx. 20 hours - will bloat, soften and eventually break.
Water energy and the ephemeral river in a modern grotto - the garage.
